Looking Backwards Before Moving Forwards...
Lately my mind has been distracted and reflecting on 2011. Sometimes I feel it's important to look back, stopping for a moment to see what you have achieved and how you can improve things in the New Year... To me, January seems to be an odd month, when you can think about all of the other months ahead of you and new possibilities you can create in the future. It's interesting how we all have to drive our own lives in a direction that suits us and somehow along the way try to find some kind of inner peace and happiness.
I think when you do something creative that you really enjoy, it can make you feel truly happy and alive, maybe that is when you find the key to positive well-being in life.
Tell me friends, what makes you feel happy and fulfilled in your life, apart from family and friends?
When I look at Zigsa cat stretched out enjoying the sun, I feel he has found the answer to cat well-being. Life is simply uncomplicated... Oh to be a cat!
Because of distractions lately, I have not started my small fairy paintings yet, but I did make some more commissioned jewellery pieces and another heart picture for Valentine's day. A new Owl and the Pussy-Cat picture will be listed in Etsy this week.
Traveling back in time...
Last year I visited a few inspiring places with a lot history and plenty of character. There is nothing like visiting grand old houses to invoke the imagination.
The Vyne is a 16th-century house in Hampshire that was visited by a few famous people in the past. The Tudor king, Henry VIII stayed for a while, Jane Austen went to a few dances there and Tolkien was inspired by an engraved gold ring that can be seen in a glass cabinet in the Library. It is such small precious item that helped Tolkien to create his amazing book!
The house has a classical facade and does not look very Tudor from the outside, but it has a mixture of styles due to renovation and changes in fashion over the past 350 years.

My favourite room was the long Oak Gallery with it's Elizabethan influences and beautiful stained glass window. The glass design is called 'The Market Seller and her Dog in a Landscape' by William Price the younger, c1750.

Huge paintings of ladies from the Tudor court decorate the oak paneled walls. They look like ghostly figures staring down at the visitors who view the house... I wondered what their lives were like all those years ago during King Henry's and Queen Elizabeth's reign.
The Vyne has it's very own wood and well kept gardens. I was more interested in seeing the woods than the garden.
The day I took these photos the sun was low because it was autumn time, so the trees looked especially magical with dappled light and rainbows.

Revisiting Lacock Village...
Also last year I went to Lacock village in Wiltshire and of course I had to stop by to see the pottery again. It was a cloudy day and not like the warm spring afternoon on my last visit.

Unfortunately I do not know who created these lovely ceramic pieces, but I especially liked the owl bowl and cat plate. They really are fun works of art.
I now see that Lacock pottery is on facebook. The link is HERE if you would like to follow!

  2. Hi JoAnne,
I love this whole post. I can relate to your feelings about January. Meaningful creativity brings me much peace and happiness and I have to say I too look at my cats snoozing in front of the wood stove happy as can be and think, how simple and lovely. The photo's of your visits to historic places were interesting to look at and read about.
Thanks for sharing. Hope you are well!

  8. Beautiful places and pottery. I just said those very words to Pasha as he curled up in front of the wood stove. Oh to be a cat!
I was finishing an intense film and thought... oh, to be a cat and NOT have all that drama! But maybe to him there is drama? Anyway, Ziggy looks like the prince he is on that magic carpet in the sun!

  10. Cats really do have the life, yes. What a wonderful tour you've given here – I'm especially moved by the 'Tolkien' ring and of course, the stunning woods. And is that a new header? It's really nice and the name is lovely and quite fitting (sorry if I'm late in noticing)!
    Take care

  14. What a wonderful, thought-inspiring post, Jo. I feel as though we're travelling with you.

As to what brings happiness ... Well, for me, happiness is mostly in being and doing exactly what I'm here to be and do, but is also brightened by the loving connections made along the journey, and in the gifts we share. I really think Zigsa has the answers. He is all wise and knowing. ;-)

It is good to be sharing the journey with you, dear one. Enjoy the creative times ahead. Much love and bright wishes. xx

  16. Not to lose ourselves in daily rush, we sometimes need to pause and to look back. I’m happy for you, Jo, that you had a wonderful trip which is shown by your fabulous photography. Apart from my families and friends, I treasure my solitary time. I’m happy that I have some with which I can become one. One of them is solitary walk with my camera, looking for the essence of life and capturing the moment of now to keep them as frozen music.

Owls are thought to bring in good luck. Japanese word for owl is “fukuroh”. For one thing, “fuku” means “good luck or fortune”, and for another, “fu” is “no” and “kuroh” is “hardship”. I like them for their mysterious, magical atmosphere and cute appearance. I feel awe for their aged, wise looking.

    Have happy days ahead.

  17. Hi Joanne:) I loved your post and it was so awesome seeing the beautiful places you were able to visit. I love seeing your cat Zigsa, he is a handsome guy.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. What is really making me happy is all of the possiblities for my creations this year and starting to teach classes. The conflict I am having is with my "day job", I feel I am doing a job that goes againt my core beliefs, like selling out. So being able to come home and create is my sanity. I am hoping to leave that job very soon and become a full time sewing/art teacher.
I hope you have a great year and your dreams come true too! Have a pretty day :)
    Gail
PS: I have an etsy shop, but its been empty. I have been filling up my website, and my etsy shop is next. I am going to give that a really good shot and learn as much as I can about how to make the most of etsy! (())

Zigsa is fabulous and look at those spots!
The jewellery you made for me at Christmas is special and I highly recommend your shop to people. Love the new cat and owl brooch.
I'm glad I can leave a comment here at last because sometimes I have a few problems with connecting onto blogger.
Vyne house and Lacock pottery are places I really need to visit this year. The photos are excellent and informative.

  21. It is great to have some new inspiration for the New Year and I'm pleased to hear that Gail, you will be opening an Etsy shop soon!
I hope all of your creative projects go well.

Nice to see you back Sarah!
I sometimes open my blog posts up to none registered bloggers like yourself so anybody can leave a comment, but the problem with that is I tend to get a lot of spam mail. That might explain why you have problems with leaving comments here sometimes, when I revert back to blog registered users only!
Thank you so much for buying the 'Heart Hare' picture and a few jewellery pieces. I really enjoyed doing the commissions for you! ;-)

  26. Awesome post! So many goodies and treasures and inspiring photos. What an amazing place the Vyne is! Definitely one of those "If these walls could talk" places! How transporting to be there! LOVE that ring. reminds me of something from King Arthur's time ...

I love the little owl bowl. I am going to have have to check out that etsy site. I am a little jealous of your kitty! Blissed out, I'd say ... napping in a ray of sunshine. (non here today)

Outside of my friends and family, what makes me happy is seeing great art, going to museums, road trips and travel, being around trees, music, good food, being creative, painting, taking photos and my own bed. :)

  27. Thanks for your comment on my blog. I have never been to the Vyne and will go when I can, I think it's National Trust and I have a card for it, so I SHOULD go! Lacock village always looks interesting, but I have never managed to visit when things are open. That pottery is exceptionally nice.

I can be happy like a cat, lying in the sun (it's a beautiful picture). What makes me happiest is writing stories and making things up, although I also like doing art. It puts you into a different mental state, somehow.

  28. What a beautiful blog! Zigsa is gorgeous.

Thank you for the tour and time travel - I wonder what treasures there are in that library.

I completely agree - I feel most alive when I'm creating - whether it's a piece of writing or a painting or a collage, that's when I'm filled with that wonderful sense of truly being.

  29. Taking photos for me.I feel very happy when I see twinkling rain drops on grasses or leaves or spider nets through my camera after rain. Sometimes they look like showers of lights.
I am sure a cat is a genius to find a simple happiness. I love this lovely photo!! And why don't you invite me,I want to lie beside your cat and share happiness!
It is an interesting story about the gold ring!! Thanks a lot! For Tolkien, to meet this ring was serendipity. “The Lord of the Rings” is a great, great work! keiko
